Twilight for Oscars?

What?! Twilight wants to be nominated for an Oscar?!

It seems like Summit Entertainment wants the final installment (or will it be installments?) to be loved by the critics. In the world of movies, there are some that are called “critic-proof”, which means no matter how bad the reviews to the film was, it still becomes a giant hit at the box-office. Case in point, the Twilight saga movies. The movies have been panned by critics, were in fact it can be almost called “mock-proof” because it seems like it doesn’t matter what they say, the die-hard fans of the series will still go and watch the movies.

Which brings us to the question: why? The first two installments have raked in over a billion dollars at the box-office. So, why? The studio seems like they want the franchise to be “respected.” Do they want to follow the footstep of Lord of the Rings? The first three movie of the saga were helmed each by different directors. Twilight was directed by Catherine Hardwicke, whose works before that include Thirteen and the Nativity Story. On the second installment, the studio turned to a more Hollywood friendly director Chris Weitz who made The Golden Compass. But on the third film, Eclipse, they chose another director David Slade who did not make commercially successful films like Hard Candy and 30 Days of Night. It will come out in theaters on June 30, 2010.

Entertainment Weekly reported that the studio is choosing between three Oscar favorite directors: Sofia Coppola, Gus Van Sant and Bill Condon. They want either one of them to direct Breaking Dawn. But will one of them take the shot and helm the vampire movie/s?

In an interview with MTV News, Rob Pattinson, who plays Edward Cullen, hinted that Van Sant would be the perfect choice to direct the movie. He said, “He shoots everything in Portland. He’s good at making it look beautiful. It’s all about teenage love and obsessions. I think Gus Van Sant would be great.”

According to EW, Summit has reached out to Coppola and Condon, too. But both parties have not confirmed nor denied whether it is true or not.

Van Sant has been nominated twice at the Oscars for the movie Good Will Hunting in 1998 and Milk in 2008. His other films include My Private Idaho (1990) with Keannu Reeves and the late River Phoenix, and Elephant (2003) in which he won the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. A rep from Van Sant has confirmed that they have been approached by the studio.

Another surprise front-runner is Coppola. She is the third female director who has been nominated at the Oscar for Best Director for her movie Lost in Translation in 2004. Her other film credits include the cult classic The Virgin Suicide with Kirsten Dunst, and the biopic Marie Antoinette which also starred Dunst. She is the youngest and only daughter of award winning director Francis Ford Coppola who brought us The Godfather and Apocalypse Now.

Condon has been nominated for Best Director at the Oscars for the musical Dreamgirls, which starred Beyonce, Jamie Foxx, and Jennifer Hudson. He won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 1999 for the movie Gods and Monsters.

But Kristen Stewart, who plays Bella swan, has confirmed that Summit has approached the three directors. She told MTV, “I’m glad that’s out and about (news of potential filmmakers). I didn’t know that was something that people knew. I think it’s awesome. I think it’s so cool that they’re reaching (out to these directors). I think any one of those people would be great.”

Screenplay of Eclipse Leaked Online!

The screenplay of the third installment of the Twilight Saga, Eclipse, has been leaked online. The copy by actor Jackson Rathbone, who plays Jasper Hale in the film, is now found in the internet and is available for download.

The authenticity of the 112 page script has been questioned, but the script’s pages are watermarked with Rathbone’s name. Scripts are marked with their names on to help them keep track of their copy. But both Deadline Hollywood and EW.com confirmed that the PDF file of the leaked script is real.
